Pewaukee, WI water hardness

Pewaukee water hardness

How hard Pewaukee's water is depends on which of its two utilities serves you, and the two report their numbers in different ways. Every figure either one publishes falls in the USGS's very hard category.

Two utilities, seventeen wells, no purchased water

The City of Pewaukee and the Village of Pewaukee each run their own water utility. Together they pump seventeen municipal wells, ranging from 153 to 1,415 feet deep.

Wisconsin DNR records list both systems as 100% groundwater, with nothing bought from any other supplier, so every hardness figure in Pewaukee describes well water from the aquifer below the town.

The City side: one figure per service area

The City publishes hardness for each of its service areas, and says it does so to help residents set their softeners. The East Side system reads 338 parts per million, about 19.8 grains per gallon; the West Side and Highlands system reads 345, about 20.2.

Parts per million, the City's unit, means the same thing as milligrams per liter, so its numbers sit directly beside a lab report.

The Village side: a measured range

The Village's 2022 Water System Master Plan recorded hardness from 280 to 380 milligrams per liter across its wells and its entry point. That works out to 16.4 to 22.2 grains.

Because the Village range runs below and above both City numbers, a Village tap can come in softer or harder than a City one, and the reading inside your own house carries more weight.

Every Pewaukee figure is past the very hard line

The USGS sorts water by milligrams per liter of hardness: 60 or less is soft, then moderately hard up to 120, hard up to 180, and very hard beyond that, a line equal to 10.5 grains.

Pewaukee's lowest published number, the Village's 280, sits a hundred milligrams per liter past that line. The City's 338 and 345 sit further out still.

Which figure is yours: check the bill, then the service area

Your water bill names the utility. A City customer then needs the service area, East Side or West Side and Highlands, which the City utility can confirm from the address. No water bill at all usually means a private well, and then the lab report on that well holds the number.

On the call, a City address starts from its service area's figure and a Village address from the master plan's range. Whichever it is, the plumber takes a hardness reading at your tap before anything is connected, and the softener is set to that reading.

Common questions

Is City or Village of Pewaukee water harder?

Neither, cleanly. The City's 19.8 and 20.2 grains fall inside the Village's measured range of 16.4 to 22.2, so a Village tap could read lower or higher than a City one.

Do these figures apply to private wells in Pewaukee?

No. They describe what the two utilities pump and deliver. Hardness in a private well is known only once a lab, or a test at the tap, measures it.
