City or Village of Pewaukee: working out which water reaches your tap

Two municipalities share the Pewaukee name, and each runs its own water utility. Before any softener figure means anything, you need to know which one, if either, serves your house.

Same name, separate systems

The City of Pewaukee and the Village of Pewaukee are separate municipalities with separate water utilities. They do not share a hardness figure, and each publishes its own.

Between the two, seventeen municipal wells supply Pewaukee's public water, all of it groundwater. Which of those wells feed your tap depends on which utility you belong to.

The bill is the quickest answer

Look at who sends your water bill. It comes from the City of Pewaukee or from the Village of Pewaukee, and that settles which set of figures applies to you.

A mailing address that just says Pewaukee cannot settle it, since both municipalities go by the name. The bill can.

If no water bill ever arrives, the house almost certainly has its own well, and neither utility's figure describes it.

On City water, one more question: which service area

The City divides its system into service areas and publishes hardness for each: the East Side at 338 parts per million, and the West Side and Highlands at 345. If you are not sure which one serves your address, the City utility can tell you.

The two are close, about 19.8 and 20.2 grains, so the service area matters less than knowing you are on City water to begin with.

On Village water, a range rather than one figure

The Village's 2022 Water System Master Plan measured 280 to 380 milligrams per liter across its wells and entry point, or 16.4 to 22.2 grains. A Village address starts from that range, and the reading at your own tap narrows it to a single number.

The sewer is a separate question

Where your water comes from and where your drain goes are two different things in Pewaukee. Homes in portions of Pewaukee drain to the Waukesha sewer, and the City of Waukesha's softener salt program follows the drain, whichever utility supplies the water.

The home page sets out what that program asks. If you know which sewer your house uses, mention it on the call.

Common questions

My mailing address says Pewaukee. Which utility is mine?

The mailing address cannot tell you, because both municipalities use the name. Your water bill can: it comes from either the City of Pewaukee or the Village of Pewaukee.

Does it matter which utility I am on if I am getting a softener anyway?

It sets the starting number. A City address starts from 19.8 or 20.2 grains, a Village address from a range of 16.4 to 22.2, and the plumber's tap test on install day fixes the setting.
