Reading the Village of Pewaukee's 2022 water master plan

The Village of Pewaukee's 2022 Water System Master Plan was written by engineers for the utility, not for households. A few of its findings still matter to anyone choosing a softener on Village water.

The hardness range it measured

Across the Village's wells and its entry point, the plan recorded hardness between 280 and 380 milligrams per liter. In grains per gallon, divide by 17.1: 16.4 to 22.2.

Even the bottom of that range is well past 180 milligrams per liter, where the USGS very hard band begins, and the top of it is past twice that line.

What the plan offers is a range, not a single number. Treat it as the span Village water can fall in, not as the reading at any particular tap.

Everyday issues, in the plan's own terms

The plan describes the Village's day-to-day water issues as aesthetic, and it names four of them: iron, dissolved solids, chlorides and manganese.

In drinking-water terms, aesthetic issues concern how water looks and what it leaves behind, as distinct from the compliance work covered further down this page.

Iron just under the staining line

Iron in Village water has measured as high as 0.26 milligrams per liter. Staining tends to start showing at about 0.3, so the measured iron sits close to that line without reaching it.

If you already see rust-colored stains in sinks, tubs or toilets, say so on the call, along with any iron figure you have. It belongs in the conversation before anything is sized.

Radionuclides are the utility's project

Separately, both Pewaukee utilities are working through radionuclide compliance, which traces back to natural erosion of the deep aquifer, and both are building treatment for it. That work sits with the utilities.

A softener has no role in that project, and the quote stays on hardness.

What to carry from the plan to a quote call

Three things: that your address is on Village water, that Village hardness has measured anywhere from 16.4 to 22.2 grains, and whether you have noticed staining. The plumber's tap test on install day supplies your house's own number, and the final retest has to read zero.

Common questions

Does the master plan cover City of Pewaukee water?

No. It is the Village's plan for the Village's system. The City publishes its own hardness figures by service area: 338 and 345 parts per million.

Will a softener deal with the iron the plan mentions?

Quotes here are for hardness only, so no claim is made about iron either way. Give us your iron figure or describe any staining, and it becomes part of the conversation before anything is sized.
